a fad or the way forward?..
So along with starting Eve’s Choice, I’ve also started my journey to becoming plastic-free and a more zero-waste household. With that, I’ve been looking at period pants for a while but have been dissuaded by the sheer cost of them.
I’m a pads lady, not a tampon lady, so the cup just isn’t an option for me, though polluting the planet with plastic isn’t very desirable either. So in the January sales, Modibodi (the best for heavy periods according to the reviews I’ve seen and friends) had a large discount, so I decided this was the moment to try them out.
I have not been disappointed!
I have to say they are hundreds of times better than I thought they would be. I purchased the super comfortable Seamfree Boyleg, Moderate-Heavy Absorbency, 6 pairs as a starting point. I will be buying more but will wait until the next sale to get some overnight pairs as I just can’t stomach the £25 cost (the £10-15 sale price is more than enough).
Apart from the cost (and there are cheaper brands out there for those ladies that don’t suffer from really hi-flow issues), I can see nothing but positives from swapping over. You do have to rinse them after use and then make sure they are out of the water (no soaking them) as they wait for a washing machine load, but as a mother of 2 washing blood out of knickers is one of the least gross things I’ve had to do in my life so no big deal. If you are squeamish, it’s more money, but there are ‘gadgets’ out there that mean you don’t have to touch them as you rinse them. I purchased a large delicates bag to hang them in over the shower tray before tossing the whole lot into the washing machine.
So wear, rinse, add to the bag, and wash.
When I get down to 2 remaining pairs, the dirty knickers go into the washing machine, either with other ‘hand wash’ only items or by themselves. They have to be washed cold and without fabric softener (the softener reduces the fabrics ability to absorb water) and no tumble drying. Once dry they are ready to be used again. This means there is no bathroom bin full of soiled sanitary towels that can sometimes be hanging about for a week.
You can buy waterproof handbag pouches for rinsed knickers for when you are out and about, but if you were to change into a heavy-overnight pair before going out you would comfortably have 8h of wear even on a very heavy day.
Overall I think for me the knickers outperform the sanity towels.
No leaks.
No walking to the toilet hiding a sanity towel.
No rustling in the toilet.
No smells from the bin.
No more worrying if I have enough products to last before the next shop run.
Less plastic passing through my home.
I recommend waiting for a sale and giving them a try; I don’t think you will ever want to go back to disposable products again; I know I don’t!
